Subway tokens are introduced.
February 21, 1919
The Boston Elevated Railway Company issues the round disks. The first subway tokens in Boston, they are replaced in July 1919 by paper tickets. Bronze tokens are then introduced in 1923, discontinued in favor of coins in 1920 [the mid 1930s], then reintroduced by the Metropolitan Transit Authority on November 10, 1951. Tokens are replaced with quarters by the MBTA when the fare is raised to 25 cents on December 1, 1964, reintroduced in 1980, and replaced by electronic tickets in 2005 and cards in 2006.* The last token is sold at Government Center Station on December 6, 2006, and they are no longer redeemed as of July 20, 2012.
